Asking Michael Johnson, Vice President, Head of Estate Division at Eiseman Jewels, to pick his favorite estate jewelry designer is much like asking a parent to choose their favorite child, but here he shares some of his most-admired:
“I have a strong appreciation for David Webb's work due to the immense drama present in his pieces, characterized by a harmonious interplay of contrasting colors and shapes. Jean Mahie holds a special place in my heart as well, given that their designs are painstakingly crafted by skilled artisans, resulting in a rustic aesthetic rarely seen in contemporary creations. Lastly, the captivating and bold aesthetics of Henry Dunay's designs, combined with their distinctive finishes, make them another one of my favorites.
In 1948, American jeweler David Webb emerged as one of the leading in-house designers for the luxury jewelry industry. He moved his life from North Carolina to the big city of New York to pursue his dreams as a creative. He quickly became well-known for his dramatic and unique style consisting of animal- inspired sculptures, bold yellow golds, and a dynamic use of diamonds and pearls. In 1962, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy selected Webb to make the official Gifts of State. Webb is perhaps best known for his love of gold brightened with diamonds, to make jewelry to be worn anywhere at any hour of the day.
Jean Mahie entered the luxury jewelry industry in 1970 headfirst with bold and disruptive designs by father daughter founders Jean-Marie Mazard and Jaclin Mazard. The brand gained recognition for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs, drawing inspiration from all over the world, including Roman ruins, African legends, and Egyptian tails. Jean Mahie jewelry has a very dedicated following and is highly coveted by collectors due to its limited availability and one-of-a-kind craftsmanship.
Classic American jeweler Henry Dunay is renowned as one of the finest goldsmiths and jewelry makers of the 20th century. Dunay began his career in the luxury jewelry industry in the 1950s – starting as an apprentice, then designing pieces for other designers, including Harry Winston, before handcrafting his own designs in his own name. He is renowned for his stylistic choices that stand out among the rest with his soft curves and unique textured metals. Henry Dunay’s work garnered many prestigious awards from the 1960’s to the early 2000’s, and has been worn by iconic figures and celebrities from around the world.
