Tell us about Parmigiani Fleurier and what makes your collection unique?

We are blessed to be unique in not just one, but three very distinctive ways.

1- Michel Parmigiani, the creator and namesake of Parmigiani Fleurier is an omnipresent force for the brand.  Few others have the luxury of working with their founder and visionary each day.

2- Restoration. Michel Parmigiani began his storied career in restoration, considered the blackbelt of the watch making artform. In addition to being a gifted watchmaker, a master restorationist must also be a historian. They must understand the period and technology of the piece they are bringing back to life...it would not do to use modern screws in a pocket watch created before the invention of serially produced machined screws. Mr. Parmigiani quickly gained a reputation as “the man who could restore the unrestorable” and became one of the most recognized watchmakers in the field. Restoration is a key pillar of the brand, and the experience has influenced many design choices and technological directions.

3- Manufacture. Parmigiani Fleurier is very quietly, one of the most powerful brands in Switzerland. Parmigiani Fleurier is part of a 5 factories watchmaking center manufacturing cases, dials, escapements and hairsprings, gears and other micro components, screws and ultimately complete movements. We are one of the most vertically integrated manufacturers in Switzerland and a supplier to dozens of other luxury brands. The culture created by Michel Parmigiani to produce the finest examples of the watchmaking art is respected in each of our factories. That so many luxury brands choose us as their supplier is a testament to our dedication to upholding the traditions and excellence of the art form.

Where do you get your product design inspiration?

Michel Parmigiani has drawn inspiration from nature, architecture, and the world around us through the Fibonacci sequence (Golden Ratio Rule).  The length of the hands, curvature of cases and lugs, guilloche patterns as well as design proportions following these rules have been at the core of the design since the early days of PF and remain in all models to this day.

How has timepiece restoration inspired the brand?

There have been countless restoration projects over the years.  Many of them have influenced the brand and products in some way, some more obvious than others.  For example, the Pantograph was a limited production timepiece with telescopic hands expanding and contracting as they rotated around the dial, the Toric Hemispheres with two independent time zones utilizing one integrated movement and more recently the Tonda Hijri Perpetual Calendar, with its innovative mechanism developed entirely in-house as a result of Michel Parmigiani’s work with an antique Arabic calendar pocket watch.
